About
I am a landscape archaeologist interested in ancient human-environment interactions, settlement patterns, and remote sensing techniques with regional interests in the Middle East and United States. I am currently contributing to multi-year research projects in the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Egypt and here at home in the United States.
I am presently a doctoral candidate in the Environmental Dynamics Program at the University of Arkansas, a joint degree in the departments of Anthropology and Geosciences, where I am completing my dissertation: "Ancient Human Ecodynamics at Three Archaeological Sites in the Rub’al-Khali Desert, Dubai, UAE.” This research is designed to investigate the linkages between the histories of settlement and climate change for prehistoric and early historic populations (~8,000 - 300 BC) in what are now the desert reaches of the UAE. To do this, I'm using data from both traditional archaeological methods and from remote sensing sources, specifically from ground-penetrating radar surveys to map cultural and sediment deposits.
I am pursuing my interests using landscape archaeology and archaeological remote sensing in projects outside of my dissertation research, two of which provide educational opportunities for interested students. I will be leading a team of students enrolled in the Institute for Field Research Archaeology Field Program at Amarna, Egypt, where we will collect data using multiple geophysical instruments and create maps of surface and near-surface remains to guide future investigations. I am also an instructor of Geomatics for the Arizona State Field School at the Center for American Archaeology in Kampsville, Illinois, where I teach Archaeological Geophysics and GIS to undergraduate students. Finally, I am applying my skills in GIS, remote sensing and computer visualization as a Research Project Professional for the Persepolis Fortification Archive Project at the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago.
